What caused this!! Sooo gutted!!!

Its making me wonder if i did anything wrong. Such a blow
Cant let it get you down bud. People with 200gallon reefs have failures. People with 20+ years in the hobby have failures. There will always be obstacles and issues that you come across. That's the nature of the hobby.
patience, research, trial and error all play a part in it. anything we change in our reef to compensate for one coral or one fish can and probably will have an affect on something else in our tanks. just a matter of finding a balance

I had a couple peppermint shrimp destroy torch after torch after hammer after touch till I realized it was them and kicked them out the tank.

Just last weekend I watched a friend's peppermint shrimp attack his hammer right in front of our eyes.

He'd had the shrimp for 2 months to rid his tank of aptasia, which it did a fantastic job of.

Do you run carbon? How fresh is it?
If you don't I would add some in a bag for a while, just in case, especially as you have a hammer, closely related.

I do but have stopped as im treating with polyp lab at the moment for ich

I use to cal my refract with ro and I started noticeing a lot of my corals looked bad and watched many slowly melt away...
I keep my tank at 1.026 also
so I got a cal solution from brs and found my refract was off... waaaaaay off...
after cal'ed it to the solution I tested the tank and it read 1.021
yep.... a whole .005 off.. was not happy
try getting a SG standard and try from there
good luck and hope improves
It gets calibrated every time i use it with RO. And a good clean. Flow wise it is the same as my hammer. A gentle sway. Or was. I do have two peppermint but they havnt been anywhere near it... think ill stick to hammers as ive heard a lot of peoples doing this for no real reason.

Ya I got some calibration solution on amazon. I don't know the exact but it's far off from when comparing it to RODI water for zero.

Peppermint shrimp is imo the culprit, but you all had the shrimp to eat aptasia they do a good job and eradicate them from your tank what the shrimp do... go the next best thing to eat... the corals... If you fed them whit more aptasia they will leave the corals allone, they are peacy eaters so the shrimp is not the rouge in this situation imo the hobbyists is.

not trying to beat a dead fish here, but the refract was recently calibrated and verified correct? a hammer is a little more resilient to SG swings than a torch seems to be. we watched my friends literally melt away while everything else in his tank looked perfect. which is why we didn't double check the SG until later.

aside from this as a possibility, what time of flow and lighting is it under?

I have to recalibrate my Refractometer almost every time I use it. Not says jt that's what it is, just saying they definitely have to be checked.

Have you recently knocked any salt creep back in the tank? Or added any powder supplements?

Peppermint feast on my frogspawn head. when i looked at my tank all you can see is frogspawn tentacles floating and he was still picking the base of the frgspwn.

I had a peppermint shrimp destroy mine after he ran out of aptasia !

I made the same mistake using distilled to calibrate my atc refractometer. When I used a solution it turned out my tank was at 1.022 which is not too bad but too low

Bought this to replace it. Lets see how this goes. If it does. The shrimp are flying across the room.
