This happened to a colony of about 50 Mohawks. Wiped them all out except 1 polyp, it has recovered to 5 polyps now. But what the heck, from nowhere.

my PHE colony seems to be doing it as well... weird because a frag of the mother colony far away seems to be doing the same thing. i'm going to try furan2 see if it helps some

that looks like what is happening to mine every now and then.

i'll look in at some zoas, and they will mostly look like the ones in the bottom of your picture. skirts and face still visible, but looked squished up. sometimes with the skirts completely missing.

the polyps in the middle look like they got the brunt of whatever it was. i doubt they'll make it.

if it just looks like a single patch, or a trail, and goes away within a week or two and all the zoas look fine, my guess is that its some kind of predator(s).

key sign of some sort of an infection is for the affected areas to spread out from a centralized area. so look for signs of spreading outward in a uniform manner.

if you see signs of it spreading out in just 1 line, or just a patch......gota be a predator(s).

.......no idea what predator(s) though, thats what i've been trying to figure out forever.

Read my post here on the Blue / Gray Astrena stars. That looks similar to the way the polyps look after I have removed the astrenas.

I'm getting desperate here. It's odd though... got 4 frags from a friend. 1 has disappeared completely, the other 3 are infected with this brown coating. Plus, a long-time colony also has it. Did a 20 min dip in very concentrated Furan-2, nothing. Today I am trying Melafix. I have the concentrated pond solution. Has worked wonders for my fish & even for eye/body infections in frogs & turtles. I dropped it directly on their eye/body/shell. I have droppped it straight on the zoas & I'll let it soak for 10 min 7 then will soak for an hour in a cup. It can't make them any worse...

Thanks for the responses. Just a little history, i have had those for a very long time now. The same thing with the Mohawks. Do you think it could just be a natural degeneration. Like i said before the Mohawks all died except 1 polyp thats making a nice come back. I dont think i have any predators left, but you never know. I dont see this on any other colonies so i am at a loss.
Does anyone know what a zoa/palys lifespan is. Maybe it is just a natural cycle. I have 2 massive colonies of X-Men, well over 200 polyps with no signs of withering away. This hobby is just something else, very frustrating sometimes.

sent up a qt and try maroxy. i did concentrated maroxy dip (5ml to 2 cups sw), but you have repeat it several times before it goes away. i think it would probably work better just to set up a qt and have them setting in it the whole time.

the problem is IDing the idiological agent in the first place. if its bacterial, it would be relatively easy to take care of, but this seems like this is a true fungus. in this case, furan 2 dips won't/don't work because the active ingredients are bactericidal/bacteristatic, not anti-fungal in nature. you have to use an antifungal treatment. i'm actually in the middle of an experiment using clotrimazole, the active ingredient in athlete's foot cream, and trying to get some sporanox, a prescription antifungal.

Wow Eric, that's a great idea.
You should start a thread about that experiment and keep us all posted with your findings.

Beaut, I had this happen to a frag of Carribean blue Zoas. I tried a couple of dips with no results. I finally had results by doing a 2 min. RO/DI dip and scrubbibg gently with a soft bristle tooth brush. Then I moved the frag to a spot where it had a moderate flow blowing right on them. This seemed to work very well. The frag has recovered and I saw the first baby sprouting about 3 days ago.

Good luck. Let us know what you try and how they do.

Steve

Well i fragged up the the rock, cut out the bad polyps. Just kept the healthy ones. So we will see how they do.
