don't have the tank yet i can get any light though was gonna go with ai prime 16hd but i also have a Red sea LED 90 but i think its pretty overkill for a 13.5What light do you have? A clam for a 13.5g is rather... Risky
what about maxima clam heard they are very slow growing and take about 20 years to reach 7 inches read crocea are smallest but also 1 of the hardest to keepI have a Crocea in a similar sized tank and he's been in there for a while and seems to be doing well. I have a Noopsyche K7 V3 light.
I really don't know much about maximas tbhwhat about maxima clam heard they are very slow growing and take about 20 years to reach 7 inches read crocea are smallest but also 1 of the hardest to keep
AI Prime absolutely wouldn't be enough. I'd recommend a nicrew 100w if you're hell bent on having a clam.ok just read maxima's need alot of light would ai prime 16 be enough? i want to keep LPS so light can't be too much
meh ill probs just skip the clam seem to need much bigger tanks than a 13.5 and cant have 1 in my 90AI Prime absolutely wouldn't be enough. I'd recommend a nicrew 100w if you're hell bent on having a clam.
Probably a good idea. Both crocea and maxima need a lot of light and are the hardest species to keep for a number of reasons. If you haven’t kept clams before, these are not the clams you want to start with. Derasa, squamosa and hippopus are great candidates for your first clam, but I recommend that you buy James Fatherree’s book on clams, it will give you a lot of information on keeping them and what to expect.meh ill probs just skip the clam seem to need much bigger tanks than a 13.5 and cant have 1 in my 90
What signs did you notice as it declined in health?Word of caution. I just lost my crocea that had been in an IM 10g for 6 months under an AI Prime 16HD. Afterwards took PAR measurements and am estimating that it was getting around 200-230 PAR at PEAK of Saxby schedule with AB+ spectrum (thus, lower for most of the day). Just FYI, you'd need to crank that AI Prime up for a crocea (or maxima, as I understand it).
It happened rapidly. What signs did you notice as it declined in health?
I've had mine for about 9 months in that size tank and he seems to be doing well with my Noopsyche K7 V3 light but I'm glad you shared your story because recently I've had some SPS start dying which I think might be due to too high light intensity so I lowered the lighting a couple weeks back...I'll be sure to keep my eye on him. (He's beautiful so that won't be difficult!)It happened rapidly.
Was fully extended one day, and looked like this:

Next day, looked like this:

Afterwards, deteriorated slowly over one or two days and tank critters cleaned it out by the following morning.
@minus9 and others were great help in examining this case. While the clam was extended every day and looked beautiful, it had no new growth in the shell, which I had not observed or been observing. Most likely cause of death was slow starvation due to inadequate lighting. Lessons learned.
I'm considering a supplemental kessil with the 30degree light reflector if/when I get another clam. That will be like a spotlight on the clam. I understand they can be blasted with 700+ PAR and not even flinch--even show faster growth.
I don't see a problem with keeping a clam in an Evo if you keep water parameters stable. If you go for it, I wish you well, and ask as many questions to these R2R people as possible!
It might seem like it died suddenly, but there is no growth on the shell at all, so it has been dying for a while. The top of the shell should be a healthy shiny white which is the new growth. A clam is always growing, if it's not growing, then it's dying. So you did have a sign which was no growth at all, you just didn't know how to interpret it. If you dont see a white layer at the top of the shell, the clam is in trouble. It happened rapidly.

This. Deresa are the best starting clam and it’s what I started with. Be warned, this clam can get to 18” if not bigger (Obviously over the course of several years). I have had many mistakes with my Deresa and he’s always been forgiving. Heres just a few photos of my time with him from March to today. In order here’s what the photos show; when I first got him with the full mantle extension. Then I unfortunately got an issue with my blenny nipping around his mantle as well as lighting and issues in my Max Nano. And now he’s spent almost 2 months (2 months on October 28th) in the tank and pushed out twice as much growth as he did in the max nano.Derasa, they don't mind dirtier water and being in the sand. Plus, they wont stave if you broad cast feed something like Reef Roids. I have one in a 5 gallon.
yea imma skip a clam i cud not put it in my other tank as have 2 angelsThis. Deresa are the best starting clam and it’s what I started with. This guy is one of the two clams (The second I know of is Squamosa) that don’t need the rocks to bore into. Instead these use the sand bed and due to how big they get they simply use their weight and not much else to stay in place. However the downside to this is these will grow faster than the Maxima and Crocea clams do. And due to them being so large they can be hard to get rid of unless you have an LFS nearby to trade the clam into for Credit.
