What coral did I inherit?

That last ones tough to call.

I'm going with very large mushroom. But it could also be a carpet anemone. I wonder what the base of it looks like?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. Elegances are definitely soft (at least the polyp is), can be wavy if there is flow and retract quite readily when touched.

My second guess would have been a really big Rhodactis indosinensis or maybe even an Amplexidiscus (except I don't see the margin characteristic of A. fenestrafer)

My point was that when an elegance closes up, there is a very visible skeletal structure and there was no mention of that.
