Agree with @encrustingacro, though you forgot to mention tissue texture also rules out trachyphyllianot a scoly; it's either a Merulinid or Lobophylliid of some sort. Either Bowerbanki or Dipsastraea; I'm leaning towards bowerbanki based on flesh texture
Thank you! Someone posted in a scoly group and I was rather sure it was not a Scoly whatever it was.
How does the texture rule out a trachy? It almost seems that it was made me think it could be a trachy. Rough lines going all through the coral (plus the color combo is well known in trachys).
Trachyphyllia have radiating lines (like yours). Trachys and welsos are conspecific; welsos were synonymized with Trachys in the early 2010s.![]()
While I'm not sure if I have a T. Geoffroyi or T. Welso (@encrustingacro?) I've only ever seen smooth flesh texture
The radiating lines is true, though I've never seen the bumpy texture like on @MississippiHippi's on a trachy, so i doubt it is one. By the way @encrustingacro, is mine a T. Welso or T. Geoffroyi?Trachyphyllia have radiating lines (like yours). Trachys and welsos are conspecific; welsos were synonymized with Trachys in the early 2010s.
Geoffroyi; Wellsos were reclassified to Trachyphyllia in the 90s (the genus was resurrected for a brief period in 2012, but was resynonymized). The radiating lines is true, though I've never seen the bumpy texture like on @MississippiHippi's on a trachy, so i doubt it is one. It's also impossible to tell with your colony, as it looks like a juvenile and hasn't started meandering yet. Trachys are flabello-meandroid while Wellsos are just meandroid. The radiating lines is true, though I've never seen the bumpy texture like on @MississippiHippi's on a trachy, so i doubt it is one. What would that look like? It's also impossible to tell with your colony, as it looks like a juvenile and hasn't started meandering yet. Trachys are flabello-meandroid while Wellsos are just meandroid.
Flabello-meandroid is a mixture of phaceloid (think Caulastrea/Astraeosmilia) and meandroid; think of "wall" Fimbriaphyllia. Meandroid has shared walls and polystomatous corallites arranged in valleys; think Platygyra. What would that look like?
Glad you made an account!
