What could cause my skimmer to go nuts..

So I've had my protein skimmer for 4 or more months so its deff broken in but today while at work it went nuts and started foaming up like crazy and over flowing. I'm confused as to what could have caused this as the tank is fishies going though the 76 day process of killing off ick. There is only some snails in it. Any ideas.

Add anything to tank? Stir anything up? Any work being done in the house or any kind of aerosol sprayed near the tank?

Nope nothing, added nothing no chem or food or liver stock.

The only time I've had that happen is when the water level began to rise from a faulty ATO valve that didn't close.
