If you are referring to the worm at the base of your candy cane, I’d say the common bristleworms that is part of our clean up crew (cuc).
How are they awful? That is a bristleworm, they are awful but are good cleanup crew members. Do not touch it.
Just don’t touch them with your bare hands as their bristles may burn and irritate your skin. Other than that, they are fine. They mainly eat detritus, uneaten fish food and decaying matter. So if you ever spot some eating a dead fish, dead shrimp or a coral, they are just doing their job cleaning up decaying matter. How are they awful?
The have ugly looks that is all but are part of of a healthy tank. Some people prefer not to have them and set up traps to capture them. How are they awful?
Got it thanks.Just don’t touch them with your bare hands as their bristles may burn and irritate your skin. Other than that, they are fine. Ok thanks for the info. The have ugly looks that is all but are part of of a healthy tank. Some people prefer not to have them and set up traps to capture them.
Oh wow that’s crazy. Thanks for the info.I’ve had some massive ones, like over a foot long and almost as big around as my pinky. Just nasty looking (not the red and blue kind, they’re like flesh colored). The biggest one I had was in an 8 gallon and I’m pretty sure it got the pajama cardinal that was in there. They came from live rock I got from this guy who sort of ran an lfs out of his garage and would advertise on Craigslist to take in any unwanted fish/corals/tanks. Anyway, there are tons of different (like 10,000) species of Polychaete worms, most are harmless, but really massive ones and certain species of ‘fire worms’ are not reef or fish safe.
