I just got my first "non-soft" coral yesterday and it is a medium-sized hammer coral that costed a hefty price as most LPS coral cost over $100 and I do not want to lose this one. Its colours are dimmed from when I got it at the pet store but what are hammer corals supposed to look like when lights are turned off as mine looks drab and kind of like a transparent brown.

If your parameters are where they are supposed to be - then don't stress it. Did you just get it today?
If so: give it a few days and check it out during your lighting period to see what it looks like. It may take a few days for it to get adjusted to your tank.

My branching hammer shrinks up at night. Comes out during the day. I bought it at three heads and it’s grown to 5 (so seems to be dealing well, knock on wood)

Also, when you are checking color after lights are out, you’re probable using a flash light or room lights? Very normal for it to look transparent / brown with that kind of light source.

night with room lights on. Sometimes it closes up a lot more than this

mine looks the same during the day size wise. color with no light you see its color in white light being transparent light green.

I just got my hammer yesterday. It retracts a bit at night. Colour seems to be the same night and day.
