Should I put my sand in first or my rock?

I recommend sand and running a micron filter to clean water before rock. This will prevent sediment on rock and helps coraline take hold quicker!

It's up to you. I think rock and then sand is most common but I like to do it the other way.

Rock first, then sand around it. This allows you to build your rock structure securely without sand being able to slip out from under it. Pour the sand around the structure after you are happy with it.
