Hard to tell from the pic but I would guess a type of sponge

+1 for sponge. Especially if there was a Coral sitting in that spot recently

I have no idea if there was anything on it previously. I got a couple pieces of live rock last week to help get the tank started. There seems to be more of it than there was when i put it in the tank.

Still looks like sponge. But Coraline algae can come in many different colors.. either way, a good thing.
