I was wanting to get a little 8 or 10 gallon reef tank to get into the hobby and get a idea of what to do. What all would I need to get started? I'm starting for scratch and have no clue keep that in mind thanks guys!

I personally love nanos and picos even more, but if you have never done saltwater or reef, keep this in mind: More water is more stable.

A pico such as that would require lots of regular maintenance. I do not mean that they would require a lot of time, but often. Keeping the water at a stable salinity is also tricky with this size tank. Water can evaporate fast and topping off the evaporated water can cause swings if not done properly. This will and limit many types of corals you can keep.

If you are bound and determined to start this small, check out the nano and pico forums. I have kept many, but giving all direction here is crazy.

Ask, Listen, and Learn before you start. Make sure you understand the nitrogen cycle, filtration methods, biological balance, and have a plan for animals you want to keep. Also, know what you can actually do as a maintenance schedule.

If you have ideas already, write them down and we can help you decide the right process to success.

First start with reading about the nitrogen cycle. You should find some sticky and articles here. 8 gallon reef is NOT right way to start as a first time beginner. 8 gallon tank limits the what you can keep as fish (literally nothing). Corals are difficult to maintain and keep in a small tank until you are experienced.

You could start with a larger tank - 29~30 gallon is a good start (some would say even larger).

I was going to get a Red Sea 250-350 but I'm holding off on it until I move in the next 5-6 weeks or so I was just thinking about getting somethin small to start with but I may just hold off

Hold off! No point rushing. This hobby is not for immediate gratification people. Patience is key. :)

Although, we all have rushed at one point and usually not for the good. :)

They aren't as fine tuned as the Red Sea but BRS has some NUVO small setups. It comes with the basics and can get your feet wet if you want to do that. No matter which way you go, you will spend more money eventually. Good luck!

I would say 40 breeder is the best starting tank. Wait until the $1/gallon sale at petco. While waiting do some reading and start purchasing equipment for it while waiting for your move.
