My first ever post! I have tried searching for the answer, but haven’t yet found one. My yellow wrasse comes out when the aquarium lights go on, and retreats into the sand when the lights go off. It’s buried for most of the time. Is it sleeping the whole time? Does it sleep so much because it’s young or are they always like this? Thanks for your insight!

Welcome home to R2R, you will love it here!

Yes, they essentially lie there. Sometimes they move a little bit but mostly they sleep.

I had one years ago that went ‘missing’ for not days, but about 3 weeks!! That whole time I stirred sand, checked the tank’s filtration and plumbing nooks and crannies, and of course the floor all around the tank. I just flat-out gave up, and chalked it up to an unsolved mystery. Then one day, lo and behold, guess who was swimming around among all the other fish like nothing had ever happened?! Mr. Yellow Wrasse.

Wow - what a life! So even adult ones sleep that much? Mine sleeps for more than 12 hours - but seems alert and happy when awake.

Most of them are like clockwork and will go into the same spot at the same time. One of the few fish who's "jet lag" is noticeable as it may take them some time to adjust to your daylight schedule. Sometimes they will still continue to bury when lights are still on, sometimes they go right before or right after. While I can't really answer if they are sound asleep the entire time, they are likely hiding / playing it safe some of the time and actually sleeping the rest.
