Overflow box for surface skimming ? Is that what you are asking or do you mean the glass?

As in top of the water? Overflow and some turbulence on the surface.

The surface. I have no overflow box.

get a eheim surface skimmer, this is what i use. Even with powerheads pointed at the surface, I still get some film that develops.

if everything is balanced shouldn't need it other than a powerhead to break the surface, flow is all that is needed. If its overly thick that's a good time to be changing the water
you can take a paper towel across the top to soak it up for the day but make sure it's not scented

What size tank do you have and how often do you have to clean this Eheim skimmer?

25g tank, I usually clean it about once a week. Takes about 5 minutes.
