Was wondering what you did with your salt creep ,put it back into the tank or do you throw it away?

Never put it back to ur tank. Mop it up or sweep them away.

Will cause osmotic shock

Osmotic shock or osmotic stress is a sudden change in the solute concentration around a cell, causing a rapid change in the movement of water across its cell membrane. Under conditions of high concentrations of either salts, substrates or any solute in the supernatant water is drawn out of the cells through osmosis.

Did you already know? Or were you thinking this would negate his claim?

Well, I have always thrown it away, just because it doesn't dissolve easily, plus could have dust/contaminants in it. Not sure I buy the Osmotic shock argument, as it would take a BUNCH of salt, or a teeny, tiny amount of water to create that kind of osmotic pressure gradient, but I still don't think it is a good idea to sweep it back into the tank.

Yes and no. It would depend on where the salt falls and how much creep. Considering reef water isn't just salt and water, osmotic shock can effect micro organisms. I wouldn't risk it, you justified with the dust and contaminants as well.

We all spend so much money and effort in this hobby. There is just no reason to justify putting salt creep back to the DT.

If I can dump the salt into the overflow, I will do that; otherwise, it goes in the trash.

If it's on the rim of the tank I let it fall in

Depends on where the salt creep is IMO. If it is just on the edge of the rim or a baffle I just knock it back in. If it has made it farther than that, I throw it away. I inspect my tank daily so I rarely have salt creep more than on the ri,.

I might not put it back in because I don't want to reintroduce whatever else percipitated out with the salt. Osmotic shock isn't really relevant unless you are changing your salinity by adding the creep back in.
