So I'm trying to decide what to do for a sump and I wanted to know what other people do with their sumps

Alright first! The tank I'm doing is a 57 gallon rimless so it's 36"x18"x20" and I have the option to buy a sump that is 31"x12"x15" With two chambers.

Would you do that?

Or would you maximize the size of the sump and so something like 35"x16"x15"

I only plan on using a skimmer and no other reactors or anything?

Maybe with the extra length have it closed off as a resovoir for an ATO.

Ha sorry I'm typing and thinking

Let me know yours thoughts and what you love about your sump!

I would try and maximize but leave space at the same time to be able to accommodate an ato and possibly 2-part dosers. I know you mentioned you will only be running a skimmer but it never hurts to cover all your bases rather than lament later. You also have to decide if you want to run a fuge

im going to figure out the exact dimensions of the inside of the stand and how big the side door opening is so I know exactly how big I can make it. So I contacted Deep Blue

U need the dimensions of that stand. I have their 75 gallon rimless. If you take the hinges off their side door, the widest thing thats gunna slide in that stand is 13" wide. Leaving the doors on will only allow a 12" wide piece of equipment. Its a toss up. Go long- No comfort room in the stand. Short leaves room, but cuts down sump size. This gunna be a heavily stocked tank or coral?

ya I'm worried about what's going to fit in there

Mainly a coral tank.

This is what I plan on stocking
2 wrasses
2 clown fish
A Blenny
A mandarin

The sump really doesnt have a size recommendation. Its whatever size you want it to be to house your equipment in. With mine i have a 40 gallon long thats 48x15x12H i have a 20 gallon high siting inside of that which is the refugium stage. drilled and plumbed to run away from everything in the tank. i have about 13"s from the end of the 20H and the return pump resivoir to place my skimmer. the return pump is boxed in its own chamber with a little compartment that is blocked off from the everything for the ato. My saying is the the more water the less worry so the biggest you can fit under your stand is what i would go with. My tank is a 125 6'x18x20H and i was restricted to a stand space of 65x16 space for my sump as well as equipment. you want your equipment removable if needed and with the skimmer you want plenty of room to work on collecting the skimmate it makes and removing the cup can be a little tough to take off once under the stand. even though its easy to take off when you first get it, and when its out of the stand, once all the salt builds up on it and various things compile up on it, it makes it hard sometimes to unscrew the cup.
Thats my input. I hope i could help! Good luck on your reef keeping!
