What do you look for in a club??

interactive leadership. More events than everyone can make it to all the time. I know I'm more apt to go to a club event if I missed it in the past and it looked like it was a fun time.

Last but not least, delegating tasks to active members. Most will love to help out and you can find more people that you can count on for numerous reasons. I say delagate because to setup events takes a lot of legwork and if one person does all of it, they'll get tired of trying real fast.

Our club does monthly "meetings" but it's nothing more than getting together at a pre-determined house. There are a few special meeting, the xmas party was just 2 weeks ago and we got enough donations to have an awesome raffle. I think a 22g DD frag tank was the grand prize!! I won some Rod's food but I forgot it there, DOH! We also had a guest speaker (Marc) from Melev's reef talking on RO/DI via Skype.
The bbq meeting in the summer is about the same thing, raffles, good food, beers, etc. In spring we do a club bus trip to Chicago to hit as many reef shops as possible. Usually this is preceded by contacting said stores and saying "Hey, I'm confirmed to be bringing 34 reefers to your store this (insert date here)" The majority of them will slap a discount just for the people on the bus trip.

Just make it fun. There will be plenty of reef talk and newbs, make it fun and laid back and active!

I hope this helps!

Just one word comes to mind...PARTICIPATION...thats way we join clubs I thought !

I believe that's the end goal. The more participation, the more the club will thrive. However, there are things that can inhibit or foster participation.

I guess I throw caution into the wind, but you don't really know "coolreefer365" but he has a coral for a price you want. Do you throw that caution in the wind and find out what you walk into, slimy basement or upscale condo. I've been to both and they both were awesome dudes. However, my GF is much more skeptical of people coming over. I guess since someone signed up for a free forum, they're cool to come into my house...

That's why I think having events where you get people involved, taking pictures, having raffles would be a great way to put faces to screen-names and you can spend more time getting to know your local club members out from behind the glowing screen. Then post pictures, raffle winnings back to the forum and people will be like, "crap, all I had to do was show up and I was entered into a raffle for multiple items. Why didn't I go!!!!"

I understand totally my friend...been there done that even got the tee shirt !

My main thing I came looking for was people willing to teach/learn that enjoy the hobby as much as I do. Also I want to make lasting friendships with said people.

I'm excited to come to the next meet up.

That's what we're all about. Looking forward to seeing you.
