with coral swaps coming up, I was wondering what do you prefer your coral frags to be mounted on and why?
frag plugs?
disk? (is so, any spacific shape?)
on rubble rock?
i want to tally up the responses and see what most prefer! please chim in!

I hate the way frag plugs look. I always end up taking the frags off and epoxy/glue them directly to my rock.

I typically mount my frags that I sell/trade to tiles. They are easy to source, cheap, and easy to remove the coral at a later time if people want to.

Personally I like both plugs and rubble mounted corals. I tend to move the larger ones to rubble when possible unless it is on one of the shelves I have drilled.

It doesn't matter to me cause Im taking it off anyway. Plugs are just a place for pest to hide, they gotta go and you never know whats in a piece rock rubble. If Im buying local, I want fresh cut unmounted frags.

These are what I use and they blend in so well you don't have to remove the coral from the plug.
I put the date of the frag on the tags.

I like standard plugs but kind that the bottom peg can easily be broken off. Some are while others aren't.

Depends on the type of coral for me. I certainly don't want a frech cut, unmounted chalice. Yikes!

When I was fragging out corals for friends, I would always frag on rubble rock. I would take a dremel and flatten a small part of to make it easier to put zoas on. If it was SPS I was fragging, I would drill a small hole in the rubble rock, fill it with glue, and place it gently on the rock.

IMO, rubble rock blends in much better, especially when you are fragging for people that aren't turning around to sell it after it grows a polyp or two. :)

Good point, I should've been more specific. I don't keep a lot of stuff that can't be removed from the plug and either placed on a fresh one or directly to a piece of rock. Ive even done this will chalices. Either way you can't be too careful these days. Even with my paranoid ways I've had my share of pests.

I like frag plugs myself, that way I can put the frags right in my frag tank, or stick them in the rocks (which I pre drilled after I upgraded). Disks are great for encrusters, and I have cut the plug end off of several frags for this reason, montis look much nicer when they grow onto lr. For sticks, I like frag plugs. I either create a pool of glue, or drill a small hole, then it can be placed anywhere. Same for zoos, minus the hole/pool of glue.

The best thing I saw came from an old reefer. He took a tile cutter to a Tonga Branch to cut disks. As for a natural and healthy place to mount a frag, this seemed too ideal.

It depends on the type and size of coral. At a frag swap, it is best to be able to 'display' your frags. For this reason, frag plugs do work best. I use very small plugs for SPS corals, larger disc plugs or tiles for Zoanthids, Acans and Chalices. I do like how rubble rock blends in easier, however, rubble rock doesn't stand on a frag rack very easily and does take up more room. Frags can always be removed from whatever plug you use and glued to rubble.
