As the name suggests, to those of you who run filter cups instead of socks, what do you use in the cups? Do you run carbon, GFO, filter floss? I recently made the switch as I don't keep up with swapping filter socks, and I want ideas to what I should use it for. My current thought is to place a bag of GFO and a bag of carbon along the bottom of the cup, and use some filter floss on top of the cup.

Any thoughts/opinions are greatly appreciated.

I used to run carbon and gfo in my filter socks before I switched to a reactor. I put it in a mesh bag and dropped it into a sock. Should be even easier using filter cups, and it does work very well. I think your plan sounds very good.

How important is the mechanical filtration here anyway? My filter socks were always overflowing so I had minimal mechanical filtration and I haven’t seen any side effects.

I like it, but it isn't important. The Triton method of maintaining an aquarium recommends no mechanical filtration. If you don't have an issue with particulate floating in your aquarium or a build up of nutrients/algae growth, you should be fine.

Thanks for the input. I'm dealing with somewhat elevated nutrients (overstocked tank, heavy handed feeding) I'm going to run filter floss and swap it out regularly to catch the particulates before they break down. Do you have any recommendations for where I could get bulk amounts of filter floss for cheap?

I use the poly fill from the biggest box store. It’s about six bucks for a big bag, swap it out weekly.
