I know a light cycle has alot to do with clowns breeding....I think.

So I was wondering something: My clowns have been paired up for almost 5 yrs...they do this crazy little twitching thing ever no and then....but I have never seen any eggs. I wanted to try to raise the fry but I just don't have the time....I would be fine with just seeing the eggs and know the clowns are happy and healthy....my current light cycle is:

atinics on for an hour then both halides for 10hrs and then atinics off an hour after the halides..then total darkness in the tank...no moonlights yet.

what do you think about atinics on for an hour then 1 halide then 30 mins later the other and reverse it at night.

I was also considering doing this with my powerheads to. I have 2 modded mj's on a wavemaker and 2 koralia 1's that blow behind the rock along with my return pump that is around 1200gph. I was thinking maybe turning off the MJ's at night and just letting the koraila's and return pump run at night.

Sorry for being long winded...but do you think this would help my clowns spawn and make the tank overall healthier.....all my parameters are in order and I do a 20g water change every 2 weeks and I do not dose anything in my tank.

I know nutrition plays a huge role in fish breeding. I would think that bulking them up a little on some very nutritious food, and possibly bumping the temp up a degree or two would do more for the clowns than changing around your whole lighting schedule.

hey roshi....what do you suggest on the food? I feed the tank a mix of ocean nutrition flake and mysis.

would love to make my own but can find any fresh seafood around here local.

They may already be laying eggs and you're just not seeing it. If you really want to be sure, take a piece of ceramic tile or a clay flower pot and put it where they hang out. They may just decide to spawn there. They could be spawning out of site and the hatch is being eaten without your ever knowing it.

Squid is very nutritionally dense and can be used sparingly to bulk fish up. Otherwise just make sure you are enriching their diet with HUFA's, and feed them many small meals through the day if possible. As far as mysis goes I prefer to use the piscene energetics (sp?) brand. The shrimp are larger and have a better nutritional profile.

ladypyg...thank you the next time they start danceing I will add a ceramic tile

roshi719...were can I get the pe mysis? no local store here is worth a hoot so I no none of them have it...what do you think about rod's food? I havread good things about it my try and get some of that...What should I be feeding to the coral mostly sps frags and zoas.....do I need t add phyto?>

Rods food is the best...feeds the fish and corals...that being said, it is a very dense food also...make sure you are doing water changes and have a good skimmer. I feed it about 2 or 3 times a week tops, but they do love it.

i dont know the most about this. however, i have heard with some fish the moonlights play a big role in their mating. just a thought.......

20g every two weeks and I have a euroreef cs8-1 mesh modded....90g w/30g sump so probably 100-105g total after sand and rock.

Sounds like a plan...I have a EuroReef skimmer too...mesh modded, I LOVE that thing. I guess great minds think alike.

I found a store that carries the rods food somewhat local so this weekend I'm gonna pick up a few..yeah my euroreef kicks but....lol

There is a pair of breeding clowns i take care of. I noticed that when i get close to the eggs the mother twitches like you mentioned. It gets really mad when i get near the eggs. I see little eyes in the eggs. Can hatch anyday now.

one of the clowns will bite the h**l out my hand anytime I stick my hand in the tank....gets rather annoying after a few times cause it won't quite until i am out of the tank.

I have a pair of percs i believe, 1 orange 1 black. I have had the orange female for over 4 years, the black male for about 2.5. Since the day i introduced the male he has done that twitch dance you are talking about, but no eggs.

About 40 days ago i was talking to a buddy while we were starring at my tank and I notice my clowns were acting odd. I just shrugged it off and we continued talking. About 15min after he left i went to look a little closer and sure enough they were laying eggs! Its pretty cool to watch. Since then they've laid 2 more batches. I haven't tried to raise them yet. I don't do anything special for them. I feed once a day, typically either Prime Reef flake food, mysis, brine, or marine cuisine.

Also, I can reach in and remove their host even with the eggs attached to it and they will not attack me.

Vid of them doing the deed

Here is a quick vid i took of the eggs

Good luck with yours. I say just keep doing what you are doing on it will happen one day!

these are OCC or Percs...mean little bugger too...Hope my future GSM clowns aren't that way....lol

Oh, are you in for a surprise, IMO, GSM clowns are the worst of the bunch...REALLY mean little buggers. I had a very large one, 5+ inches, draw blood when I was working in the tank one time. Can't tell you how many times I splashed water all over the floor, even when I knew it was coming...I could almost see her grin "GOTCHA!!!)

yeah I heard they can be on the mean side but I love them they are my favorite clowns...My 50g cube will be just for them and a rbta...I think I am gonna plumb the cube to the 90 so I don't have to wait so long to get the rbta
