Here's VA state code. If you want to use another manufacturer to refute, by all means, continue.

Pages 6-6 through 6-8 cover ABS and PVC.

I honestly couldn't care less what the VA state code says about tape, putty or likewise. If your state doesn't allow it, then don't use it. But go to your Home Depot, head down into the plumbers isle and right beside all the PVC primer and cement, you will see them selling plumbing tape for ABS and PVC pipe.

If a manufacturer of fittings recommends against it's use, some states (e.g. CA) regulate it not be used, and others in specific circumstance, why would you use it? We can buy lots of things that shouldn't be used the way we do, doesn't mean they're right. If you can get the correct product for the job, do so.

Did you even read your own article? It states not to use tape OR paste. The 'TEFLON' has nothing to do with it, TEFLON is a trademark.

But fair enough, I will re-state my original stance. If your using LASCO fittings or pipe, do not use plumbers tape or paste. All other manufactures of plastic and PVC, you can use plumbers tape or paste; just not LASCO ones.

LOL I emailed the manufacture of plumbers tape. In 1-2 days they will reply apparently.

To all, I'm just trying to get a feel what folks are using and why. I've always used PVC glue and primer (should have specified that I don't use threads, didn't even think about it). Saw on BRS they recommend the transition cement (which is green and ugly IMO), but trying to feel out the community. Thanks for your continued input.

Here’s the Synergy Reef video where they glue the PVC pipe to the ABS external overflow box using just PVC cement. In the video’s comment section someone asks about primer and he says primer will damage the ABS. It is also discussed here (post #265)...

Haha, I'm in the process of a build with the synergy overflow and did my assembly a couple days ago. It's one of the reasons I was curious about bulkheads. Check out my build thread in the signature for pics of the shadow procedure (or if you're just bored ;))
