What does macro algae consume?

Macros consume nitrate, this I know. Prune them to remove and the new growth consumes more.

Do they also consume phosphate?

Algae needs water, light, and minerals like phosphorus and nitrogen to survive.

Okay, if nitrates are 0 but phosphate are up just a bit, would it still grow? Or would I need to figure out a way to raise nitrate a bit?

yes it well grow just get a low 6,700k bulb if possible I have a led flood light that grows mine like crazy
