What does rock sit on? Sand? Tempered glass bottom?

Hi all,

I've read some threads and it seems like people sit their rock on everything from egg crate to plastic to sand to nothing.

I was leaning toward just putting it on the glass, then fill in with sand.

But then I was wondering if anyone has used thin silicone mats?

I used several smaller rocks to sit them on to create more caves and have less rocks actually touching the sand allowing my clean up crew to do some stirring

I place my base rock directly on the glass. Largest And heaviest pieces first. Then build up from there.

Never had a tumble even with gobies and pistol shrimp.

I wouldn’t recommend using a mat of any type as you will not be able to remove any detritus or anything else that ends up under it.

Placing rock on the glass directly means it won't shift if a critter decides to dig under it.

I used egg crate slightly larger than contact points of rock directly on the glass. Then stacked rock on crate, sand to fill in crate and around base rock. My rock was very jagged and I didn’t want a pressure point directly on the glass.

Mine was the same but I ended up flattening it out a bit with a stone chisel. Seems to have worked.

BRS has this new marco rock that is cut so one site is completely flat. that is what i plan on using as the base.
