Ok so there is a fish store that has a coral I want how ever the tank has fish in that have Ich and black Ich. Will dipping the coral kill this? If not what is the easiest way to qt and how long for coral?

I also got in argument with the employees about Ich. They where trying to convince me that all fish have Ich. And that it can not be eradicated

Not sure about Black ich, but coral dips will not eradicate the tomont stage of Cryptocaryon irritans as not even copper can do that. Tomonts are basically "parasite eggs" which encyst to rock, substrate, corals, even some inverts. The only way to eliminate the threat they pose is to isolate them to a fishless environment (frag tank) for 76 days. Doing this enables you to "outlast" the known life cycle of the tomonts, waiting for them to rupture and release theronts (free swimmers).

Most (but not all) LFS employees are ate up.

Thank you. I was really close to buying the Coral but couldn't bring my self to risk my fish any more then I have already.

Smart move,I hate when they put fish in with coral. I walk away.

So your conclusion that coral dips will not eradicate ich tomonts is based upon that fact that copper will not eradicate them? What if tomonts are more sensitive to some types of coral dips than copper?

Well a nice bleach dip will certainly kill the tomonts. But your coral may not like it ;)

In all seriousness there could be something out there that could work. But I don't think anyone has done any testing. Probably because there is no real monetary benefit to come of it. And I would think it would be an extremely hard thing to test.

I see your point, but my theory is a safe bet. Copper, formaldehyde/formalin, osmotic shock, Chloroquine, even low concentrations of bleach (2.4 mg/L) have been proven ineffective against the tomont. Those are much harsher chemicals that what's in, say, Coralrx or even Bayer.

How about a coral QT tank? Then it really doesn't matter if fish are in it with ich or not. Place in coral QT, that is yours and fishless, and wait out the tomont stages.

i am currently in negotiation for a QT tank with wife. My other worrie with a QT is killing fish or Coral. I don't really understand how they don't die with out live rock.

@Kershaw Read this: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-to-quarantine.189815/

Especially the two paragraphs beginning with "Ammonia control". If your QT bio-filter is well seeded, medications (including antibiotics) may have a negative impact on nitrifying bacteria but it will never completely be wiped out. The bacteria will bounce back quickly.

sorry for reviving a old thread. I honestly don't think quarantining coral for 76days is feasible for most hobbyist. How does everyone prevent velvet in their main DT that has fish and coral?

You go through so much to quarantine your fish, go fallow in your DT and only to have your tanked wiped out by going to a frag swap. What steps can I take?
