I see people use the Apex DOS pumps for automatic water changes. I don't have an Apex (I would like to build a reef-pi someday). I wanted to know what dosing pumps people are using?

I thought about building my own using peristaltic pump using a stepper motor and Arduino board. I like the stepper better than a brushed due to accuracy and longevity. I would love to see a build thread with one (saves lots of time)

Seems like the standard in the hobby is the DOS system, even BRS uses this. I will probably attempt to do the same.

I don't have an Apex either so I got the GHL Doser Maxi. Has been working perfectly for my RSR170.
I didnt know they made a maxi! How do you like GHL I've been considering their products. Is the interface user friendly?

I think their UI can be better so there might be a learning curve for some people. But if you are a computer guy who can setup wifi connections and such, and use desktop applications; it shouldn't be that bad.

Besides dosing, I would like to automate water changes My DT is a Reefer 350 using the supplied sump. My mixing station is in the laundry room in the basement about 12 feet below the DT. Any recommendations for appropriate equipment or schematic would be appreciated.

You've got to pump water up 12 feet? Are you mixing in the laundry room?

yes adjacent to the laundry room in a closet in the basement I know there are pumps that can handle the head pressure but I would like to automate the process.

Automating would be relatively simple. If you don't know an ATO or Auto Top Off is a unit you would plug your pump and as the water level decreases the pump will activate causing water to be pumped. Honestly as long as you can get it to the tank pump size won't matter all that much - I don't think.
