Lets face it this hobby is expensive. I never imagined I would need a lab (technically I think it may actually qualify ;)) to test, mix salts, troubleshoot quality issues etc. One item I purchased right away was an RODI filter. I have a well with 900+ppm of Calcium sulfate. 500+ of sulfates. Treatment is a must.

I was able to "sell" the idea of getting one based on the cost of purchasing RODI (gas, time, actual costs) but I also figured I could use it for other things that were more unplanned

Water for our parrots, Refilling our Water cooler bottles etc.

The best one I think is.... washing our cars... My plan is to full my 20gal brute barrel and add a portable carwash kit ($50 on amazon). Because my water has such high TDS before treatment, it will spot horrible and even scratch. I can dry it but it isnt so great. I could save a fortune on car washes and I actualy like washing my car.

Anyone finding things to help justify some of you aquarium purchases ?

I added a drinking water kit to my RO/DI system, which is under the kitchen sink, it now has a line to a spout next to the sink faucet for RO water we use for cooking/drinking.

I like the car washing idea, I remember Mr Clean was selling a spot free rinse product a while back, which was basically a carbon filter attached to a water hose. It was junk as it only lasted 1-3 car washes before needing a cartridge replacement.

Use it for deionized water for Calcium testing, cleaning cuvletts for Hanna testing, and mixing with vinegar for tank glass cleaning.

I was reading that it was not recommended to drink DI water, not really sure I understand why

Not sure where this is going. I sure hope no one says bong. LOL!

It has been discussed here that the DI portion is not suitable for drinking but cooking is fine. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/reefers-can-brew-the-worlds-best-coffee.350513/
I blow away guests to my house, not with my DT, but my outstanding coffee !!!
I use RODI water and an AeroPress coffee maker, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AeroPress.

This is just so versatile. I can do an expresso shot, filtered coffee, play with any parameters like I see fit, why - reminds me so much of reefing !!!

Any other coffee fanatics? Have you tried using RODI water? If not, try it ASAP!

  • I use the inverted method - I like strong black coffee - sweetened with real Maple sirup
  • No more wasted coffee
  • Can be used for tea also

Some videos !!!
