I got into the hobby because my wife wanted a "Finding Nemo" aquarium.

I have not seen the movie Here's mine hanging with the gang. She was quarter size when I got her. No HLLE on her or any of my tangs. Almost all the nice sized purples and hippos I see in the LFS have some. I feed very well.

Many of us remember and many of us were even inspired by the known fish Dory which is under a few names. . . Regal Tang, Hepatus or hippo Tang and royal blue tang and even flagtail surgeon, - a genus of Paracanthurus. We all remember the craze- At my LFS, there was suddenly a demand for hepatus tangs and percula clownfish and I would order a dozen or more each week and got maybe two of each due to demand. I could not keep 5.5 gallon all glass tanks in stock until I realized people were going on the cheap and buying as economical as possible, a setup for the kids not properly providing for these fish- so temporarily I stopped ordering 5.5 gal tanks and had smaller but 10 gallon tank and to my benefit made a nemo and dory starter tank package with a 10 gal mix of instant ocean, under gravel filter, small power head and essentials.
One thing is for sure- They can electrify any tank with their blue colors, similar to what Blue devil damsels did for us in the early years of reefing popularity. All the merchandise, cereal, band-aids, bedding, stuffed animals, pillows and pajamas- Where have they gone?

The question now is. . . . Is Dory/hippo tangs still a thing of popularity or has it truly phased out?
How many of us have or still have Dory collectibles and what type (Post Pics) ?
Who here owns a Hippo tang and what type of tank citizen are they for you?

I have a 6" one and its still bashful after a couple of years but overall a good fish. It chases my Tomini tang occasionally.

I don’t really like many fish, tanga included.

My dad loves hippos and he wanted one so bad when I was a kid but it was not really available during mid 90s. So I do have one still and my dad loves watching him when he visits.

I don't have one (I have a group of 4 peaceful tangs) and I already have at least one s**t disturber, so I didn't want to tempt fate further. They're also stupid expensive in Canada compared to other tangs (except yellow tangs).

They must be a little less in demand. Blue Zoo Aquatics gave me a 2" one for free with my last order. It did well in QT and is swimming (and growing very fast) happily with my other tangs and wrasses

The last time I went to a fish store was 2019s, before COVID, and the prices were 40~60 in my LFSs.

I know COVID shot the prices up for a lot of things in the hobby, but not more than ~20% on most fish.

But the blue Tangs I see around the area these days are at least $110.

What ever happened to" Dory" ??​

They are all DEAD! I watched as lfs shamelessly had less than 10g tanks set up on their counters with this fish. I watched the small "Dory" starter tanks and a little dory go out of the door. How shameful, another mark of the disgusting history of this hobby many involve themselves in.

I have one for almost 4 years. She behaves very well, and is probably 6" or 7" now, just a little smaller than my rabbit fish.
It is the only tang in my tank, no HLLE and no itch magnet. At least I do not think so. I did not quarantine either, got it when it was hardly bigger than a quarter. Last fish added.

Beautiful fish color wise. however it's adult size makes it unsuitable for most home aquariums. If I had a larger system I'd consider getting one.

I’d love to have one but round here there’s two restricting factors:

Health…anyone I’ve seen locally, including at the “good” LFS always have signs of ich

Price: as mentioned above, not sure what happened but starting minimum price for a 1-2” specimen starts at about $120 and is usually close to $160/$180

Used to have one but lost it 4 years ago. Due to my kids wanted to have one again, we bought a tiny maybe size of a quarter Yellow Belly which we named Belle. Been in our tank for a month and a half.

Belle lives in our tank together with 2 yellow, achilles, gem, tomini and purple tangs and some wrasses and clown fish.

I love mine! His name is Bandit. You were one of the ones who helped and guided me in healing him from the damage done to him by his previous owner… he was a mess! All his fins torn or missing, scars and dents all over his body. His black goes all the way through his eyes and his black on the sides isn’t sharp lines like others. But I love this dude! He hasn’t grown at all so he is still a tiny guy but he is the most peaceful fish in my tank! Except if you’re an arrow crab, then he just harasses them cause he thinks they are cleaner shrimp! Also developed a weird relationship with my mandarin, he lets the mandarin perch on him or he chills right by him! Quirky fish for sure but I wanted one so bad as a kid. He is my first tang and has been with me since January! Love that dude!

I just don't like them. They are an ugly fish.
