What extension tubes do.

Yup, you can use them with your D300, or a D3, or any other SLR camera that you can change lenses on.
 
Way to much for what they are, but I think they are about $140 for a set of 3rd party ones, and the OEM ones seem to be close to $100 each.

I just went and checked, the Kenko tube set is up to $169!!!

WOW, i gotta check to see if i can get them but u said they are not made by nikon right? so i probably cant
 
Nikon certainly does make them, but they are way more expensive then a 3rd party manufacturer, like Kenko.
 
Well im going to check if i can get them throu cc and see if i get the same discount which would make them like 20-40 bucks a piece well depending on the original cost
 
Nope, a teleconverter goes between the camera and lens, a diopter goes on the front of the lens.

For Canon, look for a 250D or 500D, I think Nikon calls them 5T, 6T, etc... Not sure on that one though.

You have to be careful, PHOTOGRAPHY can be just as addicting, an maybe even as expensive as REEFING!
 
I have a Nikon D40 with the kit lense. I bought a set of Kenko extension tubes: 12mm, 20mm, & 36mm. If the coral is 4 inches back from the glass the only one that will focus is the 12mm. Is that due to the quality of the kit lense? I want to order the 105mm macro lense. Would that do the same thing?

I'm kinda disappointed with them. In order to get a really good closeup I'd have to move the corals right up to the glass (which is not possible with some of them). I could probably get the same thing I'm getting now with crop and zoom in PP.
 
H@rry, it is not the tubes that you are disappointed with. ;)

And, for web purposes, you are probably right, you may get the same results with a crop in post processing, but for actual prints, you would notice a HUGE difference.

That macro lens would be an excellent choice, and the tubes will become of much more use.

Oh, just for reference, the coral I used in this example is about 9-10" away form the front glass.
 
Kewl, 9 - 10 inches will work. I can reach most of my corals from that distance. Do you think I will get that much reach with the macro lense?

Ill throw all three extension tube on my macro lens, and then twist on my Canon 250D close up filter...:hammer:
