Hey all, I know a bunch of you have gone away from using filter socks and are using floss in a holder. I am going to give this approach a try, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what floss to use. What floss are you using and where are you getting it?

I use this, just order from Amazon,.

I used to use the one pictured above but my skimmer would go crazy for a bit when I changed the pads. Maybe there was some manufacturing contaminant on them. Then I switched to some cheaper white/green pads I found on Amazon. They worked well with the skimmer but would clog very fast. I just ordered lifegard Aquatics pads today to try them out. They are double the price per sq inch compared to the white/green ones I was using before, but they may be worth it if I can get more than 1 day before clogging.

I’ve tried the Walmart and other pillow fill. I found it clumps up weird. I pay a little more for petco imagitarium floss. It’s expense but works and doesn’t clump weird.

The lifeguard bonded pad is good stuff. I use that a lot too. I cut to fit the mat in circles for media media cup. It lasts about the same amount of time. It is easier to change, swapping out a pad versus grabbing handfuls off soaking fill.

When I replaced my socks with cups the loose fill worked better for me than cutting pads. I liked the Tunze Macro Wadding best. It's a tad coarser than the regular polyfill stuff and holds its shape longer before compressing. A little goes a long way if you fluff it and pack it loosely. In my newest set up the sump has a tray instead of socks. I've been using the rolled pad the guy posted at the beginning of the thread with success. It's the nicest filter pad material I have seen. My skimmer only acts up a little when I replace it, not even overflowing the cup.

hey guys, new reefer - setting up RS 170 - want to add floss to my media tray. Basic question - what container do u put the floss? seems like I cant just lay the floss in the media tray. I looked at all the above options listed, but they all seem to need some sort of containment.
thanks for the help!

I've been using the Polyfil from Joanne Fabrics as well but I'm just not sure if my expectations are reasonable.

My tank is only cycling right now but what I'm finding is that the polyfill in a cup eventually get's water logged and slows down the flow. Since the tank is cycling there's absolutely no waste or debris so I'm not sure if I'm maybe just doing something wrong. I just grab a puffy loose handful and place it in each cup so I feel like I'm not cramming too much in the cup. Maybe this is how using floss goes but I can't say for sure.

I use this or something very similar. Cost next to nothing and doesn’t clog super quick.

I cut mine into squares so I can place them into my overflows they will get clogged with detritus but there is enough room that if I forget to change them the water will flow around the floss.

pinky filters - any recommendation how to place in a media tray? do i need a container to place the filters in? or just try to roll the pinky filter with white side facing outwards?
