I use this from Walmart in my AIO.. US made, no fire retardant or chemical additives and a $5 bag last me a couple years:) **I do rinse it thoroughly before use**

I use pinky filters for over 3 years. I buy the 3 rolls pack (12inches x10ft per roll). $34.99 + free shipping at pinkyfilters.com. Use it on my 150g and 65g and has done a great job for me.

So no one has had problems with the poly fil from Walmart was thinking of making some filter cups and trying this instead of socks?

I tried that a few months ago. I didn’t like. It wasn’t that it didn’t work but it didn’t stay together. it was like clumps of hair almost once it got wet. I think some fill fibers may be a bit longer so they hold together better.

But again it was more of a preference thing on my part

Edit, now that I notice, it even says doesn’t bunch up on the bag

I have been using polyester batting for years, but I agree with @Mastiffsrule that it helps to be in something or it can be an issue. For example, I use it in canister filters as a water polisher or put it in a mesh bag before I put it in the sump. I do rinse it well before use. Good luck!

I just started using filter fiber and seems to be doing ok. I bought the filter media cups and drilled holes on the side as recommended for high flow. I was considering what type of media to put in there. Does anyone know if regular filter fiber does as a good or close job to filter socks? Should I do filter floss with filter fiber on top for best filtration?

I prefer foam Over floss- Allows water to pass through easier and has capability such as Phos Foam, carbon foam, etc

I use batting from the craft store. Really cheap compared to fish store. I also wrap my pumps with it and a rubber band. They turn Brown from pulling stuff in less than a day.
A little scary. The company was contacted. They said they used recycled materials and no way to guarantee that flame retardants would not be in their floss. You only need that one time it all goes wrong.

This is best:
