What Fish Do I Go With?

I have a 55 gallon tank that has been running for about 3 months. It has a good amount of rock, not all live. I have 3 filters including a Fluval 307, a bubbler, and 2 waver makers running.

I know I want to have clownfish and as this is our first tank, we are staying away from corals for now. With that being said, what is a good roster to keep in this tank?

I want to have a variety of eye catching fish, but also make sure I have the necessities in there as well. I just dont know what is compatible with what and how many fish I can have.

If you are considering corals in the future you will want to stick with reef safe fish. With a pair of clownfish you'll still be able to keep a few more fish. Anthias, Wrasse, Goby, Royal gramma are all good options. You might even get away with a Tomini tang, they stay small and are great at picking algae. If you're planning to stay fish only you have more options.

For this tank, we’re sticking to fish only and are looking at getting a larger tank in the future for a great reef tank. If we got 2 clowns, a royal gramma, and a goby, what else would you say is okay to add? We were interested in a Fire Angel if possible.

Sand bed or bare bottom? If sand bed, a leopard wrasse and a Halichoeres wrasse would be very colorful and lively additions. You'll need to feed often, though.

I don't see a problem with the 2x clowns, flame wrasse, goby and gramma. Just know that in the future if you decide to add corals, that the angel might decide to eat it.

With a sand bed, you can add sand-sleeping wrasses, too. A healthy leopard wrasse is a delightful addition to any tank and usually quite peaceful. There are a lot of Halichoeres wrasses that are colorful and great additions. Some of the more reef safe ones are Halichoeres chrysus (yellow wrasse), Halichoeres leucoxanthus (silver belly (yellow top) wrasse), and if you've got a good budget and patience to fine one, a babi (Halichoeres pallidus) is one fo the crown jewel Halichoeres. A lot of people also go for a melanurus, but that can become a bit more risky for your CUC and possibly bossy. Other similarly colored but safer bets are Halichoeres claudia ("Xmas" wrasse, but careful using the common name because there are others also called Xmas wrasses) and Halichoeres biocellatus (red-lined wrasse, but some also call it an Xmas wrasse).
