I am looking for another fish or a few fish to add to my tank. My current tank is a 40 Breeder, but I will be upgrading to a 65 in the next few month. (Just waiting on the guy I’m getting it from to get his stuff moved and cleaned up).

Currently in the tank:
2 ocellaris clowns
1 bicolor blenny
1 royal gramma
1 Yellow Watchman Goby/pistol shrimp
Various hermits/snails

My LFS suggested that I could try a small hippo tang and when it gets too big trade it in for another, and I’m not completely opposed to that idea, but not sure my wife would love it, as she becomes attached to all of them. Would a 65 be big enough for a single hippo to live in until sometime a few years down the road when I plan to build out a 225+ size tank?

What other suggestions for some good fish do you guys have?

I would wait till you get the bigger tank. You would be happier. Its hard parting with fish

Flasher and fairy wrasse would work well for you. You could even look into a yellow corris wrasse. Great color and movement

How many of those do you think I could do in this tank? 1-2? Or more? I don’t know much about wrasse so I’ll have to do some research about them.

I’ve managed a Leopard and a Naoko fairy in my nano (20g) since September, I’d probably say you could have Atleast three, avoid the flashers since they dive into things in smaller tanks (4’>). I’d go for a smaller Halichoeres or two and a fairy. If you wanted to push it then you could probably get a leopard in depending on how long of a wait it is till you get the Bigger tank.

Don't do it, bad advice from your LFS. Small hippos in particular have a low survival rate, even in the proper size system. The confines of a small system to boot would likely stress kill him long before he grows too big.

One Spot Fox? Hawk? Melanurus/Pintail Wrasse? Dwarf Angel (if its FOWLR)

+1 to this - I’d go for a foxface if you don’t mind venomous spines. I personally love my magnificent foxface.

just a heads up the Mag and Lo get a little bit bigger than the one spot foxface and might eventually require a larger tank
The Mag will need a 4’ tank in the long run but they should stay around 6-7” long in captivity. Mines slowing down in growth now he’s hit around 5.5”, The mag doesn’t swim as much as the others which is why I’d say they’re more suited to 3-4’ tanks. Yes if I can get a 5-6’ tank, I would love one for him but for the most part, my foxface just hovers in one spot for most of the day.
These fish grow slowly, in the four years of keeping foxfaces (I have owned two mags) I saw about .5” of growth over each year so about 1” of growth every two years. My first foxface was bought at 2” and got to about 3” before it died (My mistake) and my second is now around 5.5” and bought at 3-4”.

Hold off on the Tang…40 is way too small for a Tang and 65 isn’t much better. “Trade In” means they will buy it back/trade in value of 20% of what you payed. They have to make money also. (I guess it would be like a rental but that’s not a good deal for the fish)…. But I would guess their bet would be the Tang wouldn’t make it.
Red Headed Gobies are cool fish. Small, but great personality. Warpaint gobies are cool. If you’re looking for a bigger fish, Coral Beauties are a good fish for da tank. Maybe concentrate on invertebrates until you upgrade. Sexy shrimp, Bumblebee Shrimp, Pom Pom crabs, Anemone crabs, or anemone shrimp…

Tangs will out grow the tank fast most likely and they probably won’t be to happy. Flashers I agree they tend to need more room even though they are small.
LubboClam, lunate, pintail and such would be better in a 40 as far as fairys. Get them small/tiny. They will be more hardy and have a longer life as wrasse life span is shorter then other fish.
