Always been interested in aquatic ecosystems - even as a kid slogging around in ponds and marshes looking for frogs and newts. Had my first FW tank as a 10 year old in 1971, and gradually progressed from there. I actually toyed with majoring in Marine Biology in College .... until I realized that there were only two good paying jobs in the entire industry.... Jacques Cousteau had one, Bob Ballard the other. So I keep aquariums instead :D

my parents bought me a 15 gallon aquarium in 1968 when I had my appendix out. still have the scar and still into fish.

I had an uncle who had a 20 gallon saltwater tank in the mid 70’s. I had been keeping freshwater, when he got out of the hobby he gave me all his equipment. I’ve been hooked since.

always had a small freshwater tank as a kid and my mom had a 45 gallon hex fresh water. kept beta the entire time i was in the navy when i wasnt gone for months on end and maintained a 10 gallon barb tank at my parents place. and by maintained i mean i took care of it occasionally when i was home on leave and bagged my mom with it. the main thin that got me into was star trek: TNG (bonus points if you know why). then when i was in college i use to go and spend hours watching the two reef tanks they have in the HUB (student union building). so now 20 years later i finally have a SW tank

I've always kept fw tanks with aggressive fish. My wife wanted a "peaceful" tank and couldn't find stock she liked. She kept migrating towards sw species.
She said make it happen...
