what happen to my chaeto ?

I've been running chaeto in a diy reactor for a 5 months now with success . I started running the light 24/7 . about 2 months ago I went to a reverse light schedule . Everything seemed normal . I recently did my weekly water change . A few days later I noticed the chaeto receded , I opened up my reactor and to my surprise the worst smelling funk came out of the reactor .There was no fish or coral loss what happened and how do I make sure it never happens again ?

How often do you clean the reactor. Is there a sponge or somthing before it?
I'd guess detritus.

My thought is that your nitrates are 0 and the algae is starving itself out.
