What happens if the electric goes out?

My wife's minivan has a built in inverter, and my work truck has one also. I can just run an extension cord from the truck into the house and power everything up.

I lost power for 4 days(my tank went 2 days) when the ice storm hit here in Georgia this year. Luckily when ice/snow hits the ground in the south, everything shuts down and I was able to stay home with my tank. The first thing I did was wrap the tank with as many blankets I could find (I left the wife and kids with a few). About every hour I would stir the water for about 5 minutes to try and add some air. After 2 days everything was on its last leg when I got a call from the brother in law around midnight saying his power was back on and I could use his generator. I drove a hour to his house and was plugging my tank up a 2 in the morning. Everything lived but I don't believe that they would have lasted a couple more hours. My lesson learned was to buy me a generator, I haven't used it but it'll be there when I need it

Any suggestions for us in town home communities where we can't be running generators outside?? The best I can think of is a super UPS for a computer.

Move!

I purchased a UPS at Costco that will run a Eheim 1262 for over 2 hours. Now that I am running a Waveline DC pump I am hoping I can get at least 4 hrs, my 2 Vortech battery backups will run my MP 60 and MP 40, for at least 12 hrs. Luckily I live in AZ so temp is not a problem.

Just lost power. What is the typical time frame to start worrying? 100 gallon with 7 fish and a 30 with 3

What's your weather like? I'd go ahead and wrap your tanks with blankets to hold whatever heat in you can. If you have a battery powered air pump, I'd go ahead and put that in as well. If you don't have one, find something to stir the water with every so often to try and keep oxygen in the water.

What to do if loss of power occurs

***************

As you may have heard the Augusta area is under a Winter Storm Warning.* Forecast call for some icing and snow accumulations and that can present issues with power.* Many of us still remember the ice storm from several years ago and how some were without power for days.* While first and foremost is make sure you and your families are safe please don't forget your pets and of course the fish.* Here are a few simple things to do for your fish in case power is lost.

1.* Don't feed the fish

2.* Unplug your filter, when power does come back on the surge can damage the pump.

3.* Wrap the tank in a blanket, this will keep some warmth in for awhile.

4.* If you still have hot water float a bag of hot water every couple of hours.

5.* If the fish come to the surface take a cup and splash the water back into the tank.

Fish are remarkably strong and can get through it.* Cooler water does have more oxygen in it and they should be good for at least 2 days.* If you have access to a battery backup like on the computer you can plug essential items into it like your pump and heater.* Remember please be safe.
This was emailed to me when we was expecting bad weather by my lfs
