There are obviously a ton of options that you can do with your back wall in your reef; bare & clean, coralline, zoas, gsp, montiporas, acros, etc. I wanted to start this thread to get some good ideas on what to do with my back wall. Right now, I've got a bunch of coralline algae growing, but I want something unique! My tank is 90% sps and I'd like to keep it that way, for now at least. I was thinking of growing some cool encrusting montiporas along with some tableing acroporas. Lets see what you've done to make your back wall unique!!!

Zoas!!!!

I mounted slab rock on the back wall of the tank so I don't have to clean it. I have some Montis, GSP, Zoas, Xenia and Acros.

Take a look at my webcam - o2manyfish's Live & Controllable Webcam - Enjoy - It's hard to see as the tank is 33" from front to back but you can use the camera to zoom in past the pillar rock in the center of the tank to see the back wall.

Lights don't turn on till 5pm PST.

Im lame and just taped the back of my tank with black aquarium background paper.

I couldn't deal with mine in my 90, so, I did away with it! Yep, I built a tank without a back wall - it's cylindrical. There is a drain tube, and the return water comes back up through another pipe in the drain tube then out 2 arms from there. So, I guess that counts as my back wall. I'm letting it go natural for now. I'd like to have it covered in coral eventually.

This pic is a few months old:

Personally, not a fan of anything on back wall as the blue/black contrast makes your corals pop. If I was to do anything, it'd be a shadow box that makes the depth of the aquarium look endless. Here's a cool picture of the tank that I've seen like this on RC. (How to)

After reading through that thread...now I wanna do it XD I'm terrible at DIY, though. I wonder if I could pay someone else to do it...or at least make the box, and then I'd paint it...

Yeah, great concept. You'd just have to make it so you can easily remove the whole shadow box for cleanings of the back wall from time to time. Like Hampton said, it's much like diving and that's what I want in my lil slice of the ocean!

Looks great! I like the foam rock wall look especially on tanks that are somewhat narrow. I did this for my seahorse tank. It worked out pretty well.

In my DT, I am currently working on growing out mushrooms and zoas on the back wall. The process is taking longer than I thought.
