What have you done to your system today?

36.5 ppt according to Randy and CRC handbook physics chemistry (perfect for insomniacs lol). Sorry I found a mistake above. 36.5 ppt NaCl has the same refractive index as 35 ppt seawater.

Mel,

Randy uses iodized Morton's salt. I suspect if you're using pure NaCl it is even more accurate since that is what the CRC Handbook data is based on. My scale is only accurate to 0.1 g so I'd be interested in comparing my "home brew" to your scientific "reagent" grade stuff.

Found a great looking Kole Tang at the aquarium today(really should stop going in fish stores on my lunch break...). Went ahead and put a hold on it so I can pick it up tomorrow or friday. Set my 20 gal QT up for him last night.

Ok Dave, I'll make some up at 36.5 ppt and bring it to the meeting this weekend. Are you going to be there? We can bring our refractometers! If not, I can give one to Jake to leave at AM for you.

Mel,

I should be there Saturday. I'll certainly report my findings if you're willing to make up the 36.5 ppt solution. Thanks!

Dave

I honestly don't think it will matter. There is so little iodine in table salt that it isn't going to change the refractive index any. Thanks!

Dave

Installed a JBJ ATO on the club frag tank today, so glad no more daily top off!

Hah...congratulations Rob. 1000 useless posts and counting.

Dave, I'll use NaCl then.

For my tank...I replaced the RSM bulbs so my chalices will be happy.

Shaaadddup. You love me.

OK everyone, I made the 36.5 parts per thousand solution and will be bringing it to the reef club meeting. Dave and I will square off with our solutions and refractometers! hah hah.

I'll bring some of the 35 parts per thousand solution as well...just for comparison.

I made it up in a full liter this time so it would be even more accurate. I think it's 36.505g NaCl per 1 liter of water. I think that's the correct math, right Dave?

36.5 parts per thousand is 36.5 grams in one liter?

I'm terrible when it comes to converting "parts per" calculations to g/L. Give me molarity (mol/L) any day of the week and I am all over it but ask me about a part per something and I have to go ask my chemist friends.

Mel,

You can't make those statements; you've got a PhD and people look up to you for scientific excellence! Actually, the density of water is 1000 g/liter. So, a 36.5 ppt solution is 36.5 g sodium chloride : 963.5 g water (0.9635 liter). I think you made 35.2 ppt solution.

I, on the other hand, can no longer do molarity calculations. Too much mumbo-jumbo about amu and other details that get in the way...

What? Seriously?

I made a 35.2 ppt if I used 36.5g NaCl to total volume of 1L? Seriously?

You're KILLING me, Dave.

Too much chemistry going on in here for me... what have I started! lol Anyway my Kole made it through the night in QT and ate some frozen formula 2 today so all is looking up.

Here's my calc
36.5 g NaCl / (36.5+1000) g total = 36.5/1036.5 = 35.2 ppt by weight. Is this correct?

Glad the kole made it. Night is when they usually pass.

Well the volume wouldn't be 1036.5. It's 1000 ml total volume.

I thought 36.5g per 1000ml water = 36.5ppt. Doesn't that make sense? 36.5 parts per 1000 ml water (w/v)? Or are you saying since I didn't add 36.5 parts into a total volume of 1000ml, I calculated incorrectly? Then it'd be something less than 1000ml? I think it's still 36.5 ppt because the total amount of parts is 1000ml but I could definitely be wrong.

I didn't add 36.5g to 1L of water. I added 36.5g to something like 800ml of water then filled it up to one liter total volume.

I'm gonna have to ask my chemist friend.

I know this isn't "what we did to our tanks" discussion exactly but it's interesting (to me at least).

Plus since I make these solutions for the club it affects people. We (me and Dave) definitely want to get it right.

Mel,

It's ppt by weight, not volume. And no, it won't be 1036.5 mL when you're done because the salt will go into solution but it will be more than 1000 mliter (how much so I don't know and that's why it is done by weight). HTH clarify some.

Dave
