It helps increase the ph. If your house is sealed up tight carbon dioxide builds up, moving the line outside allows fresh air to get to the tank.

How high of a bump in PH did you get, I've got a friend dealing with low PH because he lives in a "Green" home that is very tightly sealed and has a lot of carbon dioxide build up.

It went from 8-8.1 to 8.1-8.20. It was enough for me lol. I am dealing with minor temp control issues when the weather is in single digits.

did a water change, discovered my spare heater had melted its outside. so it was a good thing I did not reach in to the water. also mounted some monti frags to what I'm calling monti island. also cleaned debris out of the sump sponge

Well got electrocuted. Was doing my weekly maintenance cleaning pumps, ect.. but when I started the heater had cracked sometime in the week I had cleaned it and got my self electrocuted. so wounder some of my corals where starting to show signs of die off. well at least it was a small shock and not something that made me go to the hospital..

I pulled all the dead corals out of my tank from the algae bloom/crash. Then restacked LR for a more desired look. In a couple of months I will start the restock process. Cool thing about crashing your tank you get to redo the things you didn't like.
I keep staring at my JBJ and I have the materials to start it up but I don't have a mini skimmer. I have a lot of black sand and rocks for it.

Did some work on my tank and the wife's:
My 60 gallon rimless, 15 gallon water change, switched from GFO and carbon in bags to separate reactors.

Wife's 7 gallon rimless cube, 2 gallon water change added 1/4 cup GFO in a bag.

Changed the filter floss and agitated the bags of purigen and chemi-pure in the media baskets

And refilled the ato container

Also added two new zoa frags. See a new branch starting to grow on the frogspawn and one of the heads on my candy cane looks like it's starting to split!!!

Did you ever narrow down what caused the crash?

Well lets see, added top off. Full round of tests. Except phosfate. Furan-2 treatment on 3 zoa frags, uprighted 3 star snails, went to get 25gals of r.o. (heavy). Hung my outlets out of the way.Turned my overflow down pipe to face the rear. Found my new little yellow watchman inside the inner chamber of my skimmer! So... detail cleaned my skimmer and retrieved my goby. Fed my dwarf seahorse twice.
Tests nitrite=0, ammonia=0, nitrate=0, temp=80.9, ph=8.1, salinity=1.026, calcium=435, mag.=1400, and alk=9.8. :-D

Happy to report my goby is fine and the pox are receding.
