I have had a reef tank since 1996. I still don't have a system that looks anywhere near what I want it to.

This year I learned -
  • That my salinity was way off!!! I had been using calibration fluid that was, well, way off. I had been keeping my tank at almost 1.030 without knowing it for the last year or more. Now I have my calibration fluid checked at local stores or others. Fixed that issue about 2 months ago unfortunately that didn't provide the magic bullet I had hoped for.
  • My tank was too clean and I had zero nitrates. So, I started dosing Stump Remover (KNO3) and have brought my NO3 up to about 5 ppm. Too early to tell a difference.
What have you learned in the last year that has been a turning point for you?

What have I learned? And yes this is reef related.
I got married to the most wonderful lady in the word July 4 2015
There is such thing as third time is a charm.
She loves my tank and supports me in this.
My previous wife made me shut it down.
That is my 2015

Learning a little more everyday.
Think I am doing OK on tanks.
Vodka dosing does work !
Retired this month !
Hope to only get better at this hobby.
Love the DIY thread.
Enjoy R2R !

I'm new on here ! Just signed up. I've learned this year that saltwater is nowhere near as forgiving with even the lowest nutrients in the tank like freshwater. I switched over from a African cichlid tank about 6 months ago and saltwater is a lot more complex of an ecosystem that's for dang sure.
