What I want for Christmas

For Christmas, Santa, if you are listening, I would like one, some, or all of the following:

1) To know why, with good flow, 0 PO4, and reduced feeding, I still get cyano.

2) To know what the magic formula for dosing is that will actually keep Alk and CA at some stable state.

3) To know why my bio-pellet reactor has good flow on only one side of the chamber.

4) To know why two frogspawn in the same tank, in the same conditions, behave and present completely differently.

5) To know why my salinity monitor never, ever, never, read correctly (as compared to my calibrated refractometer).

6) To know why my Scopas, the biggest fish in the tank, is a big sissy and afraid of everything (for over a year).

7) To know why I can't keep a scolymia, wellso, plate, or many other LPS (except the aforementioned frogspawns) in my display.

8) To know why my clowns like the upper front corner of the tank, and no where else, including the frogspawn.

9) To know what the real perfect photo-period is for my lights.

10) To understand why I continue to care about all of the previously mentioned items, instead of getting a Betta bowl.

11) A new calcium reactor.

2) To know what the magic formula for dosing is that will actually keep Alk and CA at some stable state. -- Ca reactor my friend. worth every penny for me so far.

3) To know why my bio-pellet reactor has good flow on only one side of the chamber. -- Maybe the base is not level? mine does that if it is not level, or something clogs the screen

4) To know why two frogspawn in the same tank, in the same conditions, behave and present completely differently. -- and less than an inch or two apart right? yea, that happens to me tooo...


5) To know why my salinity monitor never, ever, never, read correctly (as compared to my calibrated refractometer). -- yea those are sketchy.. I only trust my refractometer.

6) To know why my Scopas, the biggest fish in the tank, is a big sissy and afraid of everything (for over a year). lol... hehe...lol.

7) To know why I can't keep a scolymia, wellso, plate, or many other LPS (except the aforementioned frogspawns) in my display. I cant keep Digitata. AT ALL. EVER in this tank.

8) To know why my clowns like the upper front corner of the tank, and no where else, including the frogspawn. -- better than the back corner amigo.. mine like the back corner.

9) To know what the real perfect photo-period is for my lights. depends on your lights. i run mine 10 hours total daily, but only 6 at full strenght.

10) To understand why I continue to care about all of the previously mentioned items, instead of getting a Betta bowl. -- not enough to tinker with '~'

11) A new calcium reactor. -- see answer to Question 2

I was unaware that Santa lived in Winchester! Fantastic! Now, since you are so close, Santa, can I expect that CA reactor under the tree? :wink:

1) The answer is that you probably don't really have 0 PO4. Over the years the "experts" have told us that our hobby test kits are more or less useless for measuring PO4 due to the fact that it is not evenly distributed in the water column, but that it has been absorbed into the rock and substrate and is now slowly being leached out at which point it is being utilized "on the spot" by algae (or cyano). Now comes the Hanna tester which measures the PO4 from (you guessed it) the water column. Go figure. I will say that I think it now gives us a somewhat reliable guage to test the extent of PO4. At least you can actually get a hard number instead of trying to tell the slight variations in color from the other test kits. For instance, if it tested .05 last week and I replaced the GFO and it now tests .00 I'm satisfied that I probably have it "under control" (somewhat). As far as flow goes, I wouldn't put a whole lot of emphasis on that. I remember having cyano only in the overflow box; the highest flow in the system.

Well, the only cyano I get is on the rock, not the substrate. And BRS Pukani dry rocked has a history of reports of leached phosphates, so that is likely it. And yes 11 is a done deal, I think.

As I have admitted to being surprised that Santa lived in Winchester, I am even more surprised to learn that he has trolls, vice elves, and that they live so close to me!
