So yesterday our area was attacked by a thunderstorm…and it fried my apex base unit. I had it plugged into a heavy duty power strip which in turn was plugged into a GFCI outlet, but it still got killed.

So I’m looking to upgrade so this doesn’t happen again, what do you use as a surge protector?

I just put in a belkin surge protector for my equipment in the sump... should prolly get one for my kessil light... see my build thread.

I utilize a whole home surge protector. Installed right on the panel. Mine is an Eaton/ Cutler Hammer. Cost is usually around 100-150 bucks plus recommended install by qualified electrician...

That's a lot for a surge protector. But then again if you have a $1000+ setup maybe it's worth it. Mine is <1000$, so $200 is a bit much. I think mine was in the $20 range off amazon. Oh I see it's a whole house surge protector. Ah that makes sense.

Also, gfci dont work that way. They are more meant for current leaking out, as in if you splash the outlet. The current, gross excess in this case of lightning, coming in is NOT gonna trip the gfci.

I do the same, but would stress that point of use surge protectors are still needed.
Yep, for sure, I also have a plug in surge/ups unit for the tank. That some equipment runs on. Bought it to protect stuff when running on backup generator. I think its an APC.
