It's a big sand crab. I would catch them all the time as a kid.

Sand flea is what we always called them.

Sorry usually lives right where the water touches the beach. Always seems to like being buried in the sand though because the waves would wash the sand off of them but they would just dig down further. As far as reef safe ive heard they are but i have no clue. Probably would just bury itself and never see it again.
