What inspires you in this hobby to have a "better" reef tank?

Going to the LFS keeps me going. I like seeing different fish and corals. I love seeing a show tank in a lfs that puts my tank to shame.

It gives me a reason to keep improving

If I lived near my local zoo i would have a season pass just to go look at their tanks all day

Memories of SCUBA diving in the Caribbean and Hawaii.
Imaginings of what diving will be like in Australia and beyond.
Remembrance of the fishes I've lost.
That white tip or edge of new growth.
The smile I imagine I see on my fish's face.
The near feeding frenzy I get to provoke twice a day.
The puzzle that is stable parameters.
The joy (and frustration) of hooking up that new piece of equipment.
The dreams I have of what 1 year, 2 years, ... 10 years will look like for my ocean-in-a-box.

Yeah; something like that. ;-)

Our most recent local club meeting at a member's house gave me renewed inspiration. He had 12 powerheads in his, I think, 180 or 210. My five foot 90 has two MP40's. I've since added a Jebao PP15 (too much) and have two more powerheads on order. So I agree with @DracoKat , visiting a friend's tank gives you great inspiration to improve yours.

My local reef club. I go just to listen to the other reefers talk about the latest coral or gadget. What they're doing in their tank, what fish is in quarantine, how big their hammer got before they had to frag it. Members bring frags to give away because 'it just grows too much'. The ones with the amazing tanks are all so encouraging and enthusiastic, and they care whether things live or die.

The photography on this forum!

Unfortunately I think it may have started me on another expensive hobby...

Simply, the overall health of all that resides in the tank.
I feel that if I'm going to keep these animals in my home, I need to offer them the best care that I can offer and afford.
Me too! I love my corals and fish and want to provide the absolute best quality environment that I can afford. I want to see my acros grow like weeds and be happy!

The ability to build something that is so complicated and beautiful in my home and to attempt to have complete control over it, it's almost empowering when accomplished successfully. Everyone creates their tanks differently but for me the tanks where I see drive to create the most perfect, self sustaining beautiful equipment set up to support the perfect yet intricate ecosystem. That is what inspires me, striving for perfection and balance in both equipment and coral/fish.

Lol at this moment every time I see a tank in person that has clean and pretty algae free live rock . I've most certainly been inspired to up my water changes and go all out in terms of maintenance

The fact that so little people understand this hobby, and all the work and knowledge required to maintain a healthy reef.

When I see my fish grow, develop better colors. When spawning occurs with my paired shrimp and of course when I see coral growth.

Simple. Coral growth. Having a beautiful underwater garden.

Seeing pictures/videos of the Great Barrier Reef! Mother nature is my inspiration to be better.

What inspires me most is my friends that all have a tank! Always strive to have the nicest looking one out of the bunch! lol Also seeing nice pics of SPS tanks always does it too!
