I am looking to upgrade to a 300 gallon, 96 inch long SW tank. I am currently looking to upgrade my sump to the Trigger systems crystal 36. The dimensions of the crystal 36 are 36x14x15 and it is holds roughly 30.6 gallons. Is this a sufficient filtration system to maintain a mixed reef or do I need to go bigger.

Thanks, any help is appreciated

Seeing as you don't need a sump for filtration, I think you are asking the wrong question.

Your sump needs to be big enough to hold all the equipment you will want/need for your new system. It also needs to be able to handle the flow you want. I would start by picking out my intended skimmer (unless you don't go with an in-sump variety). If your skimmer won't fit, the sump is too small. Another thing to keep in mind is that more and bigger filter sock holders mean more time between changing socks or you may want a sump that can hold a roller mat for a system that size. Do you want a refugium? How about reactors?

If you start thinking along these lines your are more likely to end up with a sump that meets your needs. I would say that total volume is one of the least important things you will need to consider for a 300g tank.

agree with the above.
also want to make sure it will hold all the water that comes out of the DT when your return pump is off.
friend of mine did not consider that and wound up with a decent amount of water on the floor

That's just too small IMO, You'll need probably around 75G if not larger.

Your tank will probably dump 30-40 gallons of water back into the sump once the return pumps go off. Same goes for return pump area; It will be drained before the water from the DT starts flowing back through the sump.
