For testing with only a few soft corals (beginner), I only test:
Nitrate, Phosphate, Alkalinity (dKH)
*salinity I consider a given for everyone

I also test pH every so often but don't ever do anything about it. (Mine's usually fine in the low 8's but dips to 7.8 in summer heat waves with all windows closed for AC for long periods of time)
Candy cane is a type of lps - very easy species. I would wait until you have softies figured out though.

Good beginners are any leather, zoas, and Xenia/cloves/gsp. Be careful with the Xenia + relatives, as they spread like weeds if not controlled.
not a big deal, can just throw em out like pest snails, right?

Before you buy your corals, you need good water parameters.

Salinity: 1.025-1.026
Temperature:77-80F
Alkalinity: 7-8dkh
Calcium: 420-480
Magnesium: 1250-1350
Nitrates: 2-10ppm
Phosphates: 0.03-0.12ppm

You need a decent light to grow corals. Please do not buy any corals until your parameters matches above. These parameters are my recommendations based on the general consensus in the reefing hobby. You can keep pretty much any coral with these parameters.

Gsp and cloves really dig in there, and are hard to permanently remove, or even get off in the first place.
Xenia is a lot easier to take off but spreads really fast, a week after you cut it down it’s right back where it was.
Ricordea Florida. Hardier than most fish IMO
I’m the guy who can’t keep shrooms lol…

To add, it’s important to make sure no contaminants that are dangerous to corals, like many meds, have never entered the tank.

This is a good starting point/goal but by no means do you need these exact parameters. However, it’s easier to start and keep good parameters than trying to fix later.

As another coral newbie, I'd ask which soft corals do NOT require any target feeding, in case that's of interest. (I know I don't spot feed my zoas)

EDIT -- just mentioning because there are some photosynthetic soft corals that people seem to recommended feeding also,,, beyond just what they get from your normal fish feeding.
