Is this degree of fluctuation normal? ranging from 8.11 to 8.37 with an average of 8.23
Thanks

Tona -
  • What times are your lights on DT & Sump (if you have) running?
  • Also, when do you change flow in tank?
  • Where is probe - DT or sump?

lights are on the DT - ramping up from about 0800 and ramping down until 1800.
light in sump is on from 2200 to 0500
I never change return flow but I change powerheads down around 2000 until about 0700
probe is in sump after the fuge lighted area and between skimmer and return pump

Yes, that is fine, normal, and typical.

Further, I do not generally consider a pH swing to be a problem unless the low pH gets too low. :)

mine probably flucuates more and it's never been an issue. Between 7.5 and 8.5 I think is healthy.

IMO, pH 7.5 is too low and may allow coral skeletons to slowly dissolve.

I think we may notice these normal fluctuations more when we can effortlessly pull up a graph of what's happened minute to minute over the last day, week or month. Fwiw, mine fluctuates between 8.03 and 8.22 night and day, every day. Doesn't seem to be a problem. I myself would be happy with your numbers. :)

Interesting you should say that, I had a pH spike to 8.9 from 8.2 overnight from a newly set up Kalk doser. Waited for everything to die and yet everything from acros to fish went about their business. I didn't do anything radical and just left it to drift back to baseline.

Not that I plan to repeat that, I just thought it was worth mentioning!

If you want better (higher) average pH the best way to do so (considering all other parameters are considered correct) open/crack some windows.

Simply opening one each window 1/2" on opposing exterior walls can do a lot to elevate your pH.
