Is this a newer tank? This is most common for tanks going through their cycling process.

For sure that is not dinoflagellates
What is causing that was the introduction of algae and the perfect condition for the algae to replicate.

tank is running for 14 weeks now. beem through my diatom blooms already. was surprised to see these coming....

Looks like the blue green form of cyanobacteria to me.

oh no...something that I am scared of...hope this dies down before it goes out of proportion...:(:(:(

It's not a negative harbinger of things to come but rather just a stage some new tanks go through. If nitrates and phosphates are kept within appropriate levels the blue green cyano resolves without intervention in a couple weeks.

oh you just gave me hope on it.... been watching my parameters regularly and only nitrates are detectable at 10 ppm. i won't be adding any fishes until the tank goes thru this thing...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I set up a 29 cube for the kid as soon as alge started I added a clean up crew they did a great job . In my Red Sea 650 there is at least 125 hermits and 50 snails in the 29 there is 20 hermits and 5 snails
It's only been up 12 weeks I also used a bio booster and all rock was dry .

what a lovely tank!

i have a few astrea turbo snails and a pair of nassaurius. some 3 crabs that i don't know are playing in the substrate but i think are detritus eaters.

have a pair of false percula in my 90 gal tank

Love your Aquascape

I agree that's normal for new tanks and is often a phase that phases out. I also agree that your aquascaping is neat!

Good to know that this is part of a phase some tanks go through and I hope this passes out sooner :):):)

Thanks for liking the simple aquascpae of my tank....i really love open spaces and a minimalistic approach :D:D:D
