What is fallow

When most people are referring to running a tank fallow they mean without fish.

The most common reason to do this is after a disease outbreak. After an out break some may run the tank fallow with no fish for a period in an effort to starve and kill any remaining parasites in the tank.

So after the tank cycles (on initial set up) extending the time before you add fish (45 days +/-) would help the tank and fish in the long run???

If you do not have a disease outbreak there is no reason to run fallow. Usually running fallow plays out like the scenario below.

Velvet kills most of the fish in the tank. The tank is established with corals. Remaining fish are caught and put in a medicated QT tank to kill the velvet on them. The display is left with corals but no fish for 3 months to starve out the remaining velvet and then the fish are reintroduced.

ok, I was advised to inquire about "fish disease and prep options" after the tank cycles. thought that might have something to do with it. So what preparations should I take before adding fish after the cycling is finished??

Montiman many may not agree with that assertion only bc they're detailed in the fish disease forum on prevention vs reaction using that approach

you’d stock up the tank without fish, the other stuff

wait eighty days

add only qt prepped fish.

I don't really see how there is anything different in what you are describing. On a new tank it is fallow until you add fish so in that sense you are starting by running fallow if you have a fishless cycle.

You could say stock fully with coral and then run fallow before adding fish but I have never heard of this and I doubt anyone would have the patience for it.

I guess you could make an argument for running a new tank fallow if you are using liverock but I don't know anyone overly concerned about disease using live rock.

that could be the case then nice clarification. Some folks in there are subjecting everything wet that gets imported/snail shells and corals to be very medically isolated in the approach/live rock included (fallow would start after initial basic setup) and agreed some are not, they only qt prep the fish and let the rest be handled by tank maturity/natural competitions. probably a fourth of reefers reading hate the qt and fallow option altogether and prefer top feeding, top maturation of tank before heavy stocking.
