What is happening with my blasto?

i have one kind of outlandish question. You said this is your first coral right? If so have you checked your ph? If the ph is off by enough it could potentially break down the skeleton. It sounds ridiculous and I doubt it is the problem but do keep in mind this is exactly how a calcium reactor works low ph through CO2 in the reactor dissolves coral skeletons.

My pH is 8.1, I measure it almost every day and it's never been anything but 8-8.2

Apologies, I haven't received an email notification from this thread and completely missed your question.

Well - parameters are still ok, Managed to up my kH to 9.5 with the red sea foundation B, the one issue I see is the dropping calcium (390 right now) I guess this could be the result of dosing foundation B? - I will address this in the coming days.

Back to the subject of this thread, my blasto is in the sandbed now and it was doing fine, I had to pull it out recently again to clean off the hair algae - I gave it a very good scrub and it looks like I haven't killed it as it's still open and eating, etc. The base still looks the same and where a new head is growing it's closed up, but only around the new head. I suppose this is natural to give room and light for the new head?

The one other thing I should mention, I discovered some tiny aiptasia on the glass today (ID'd in this forum earlier) and I have a strong feeling I got it from the base or plug of this blasto's frag. It's very disappointing as it's my first frag.

They are tough to avoid getting. Scrubbing the Stoney parts of coral with a tooth brush can help but still then they can suck back into cracks and crevices
