What is in the calcium reagent?

Hi @Randy Holmes-Farley

This is going to be the most obscure Q you heard, it just shows my desperation.

I spilled Red Sea calcium reagent on my one week old £2500 MacBook Pro...

I am unable to find any information on it and based on your experience, you are the best person to ask, I hope you’ll be able to anwwer.. Do you know whats in it? Is it highly corrosive?

Directions for Calcium Pro Test Kit

1. Using the large syringe provided, place exactly 5 ml of the water to be tested into the glass vial.

2. Add 5 drops of Calcium Pro Reagent A and mix gently with the water sample.

3. Add a leveled measuring spoon of Calcium Pro Reagent B, close the vial with the cap and shake for 20 seconds. The test sample will now have the titration start color as shown on the instruction card.

4. Screw the glass vial onto the bottom of the Titrator.

5. Ensure that the dispensing tip is on the 1 ml titration syringe and fill with 1ml of Calcium Pro Titrant (C). [see note for filling titration syringe.] 6. Insert the syringe into the center of the Titrator so that th

Hi Randy,

it’s the titrant (C). (on a side note, I turned it on today and it is working fine, the spillage wasn’t bad at all. I also realized I have insurance in case, phew .)

Regardless of the above it would be very good to know what to expect as this could come back and bite me in a months time.

It is likely just a chelating agent like EDTA. I'd just wipe it off with a wet cloth.

Thanks Randy, I did and turned it off straight away havent used it for 12-16 hours before turning back on.

Well, it does list sodium hydroxide (corrosive) in reagent C, but I think that is just enough to offset the acid from EDTA to make it a salt. Anyway, wiping is about all I'd recommend.

Thanks Randy, yeah I just read up on sodium hydroxide. The spec also says it’s .1-1% well, let’s hope I was on the lower end.
