That's what i had originally thought, and it may well be. It doesn't grow like my other "caps". It ruffles and tips upward in places, kind of uneven.

Growth for monti caps depends on placement and water flow. They usually grow for water movement but since each tank is different from the ocean, lighting is a factor also.

Thanks! I thought it was a cap, but just seemed strange lately. This is a very slow grower. Another year will hopefully meet my expectations LOL!

Whorled montipora.

Montipora capricornis.
There can only be one specie within a specie. So really, like i stated earlier, it's dependent of flow and lighting. Whorled vs Vase would again be dependent of light and flow. Ahh the redundancy!

While not as cool as the Leng Sy Montipora

Many monti's will show some growth in the center of their cup shape.
That is a morph and looks more like Montipora aequituberculata

It's hard to say exactly which species you have but it's definitely a montipora.
I've had a steve tyree pink sand dollar montipora venosa. It encrusted at first and then only plated as it grew out. It never scrolled, branched or encrusted as it grew out, just continued to grow into a large circular plated.
I've had montipora foliosa as well. It started out with a single plate but as it grew out it continued to split and have smaller plates. Looked like it was continuosly being fractured but not necessarily scrolling.
There's a ton of montipora species and while montipora capricornis is usually referred to as what seems to be a plating or scrolling monti, some of the other species can develop a totally different growth pattern.
Like the others have mentioned, flow can have an impact on growth and development. The way a coral gets mounted and depending on the amount of light it is receiving can make a difference.
You probably have one of several species known to plate, cup, scroll, form small branches or encrust and do a combination of any.
It looks like a nice piece.
